Once Upon a Time in the West

By Steve Evans.

Part 1: A Shot of Whiskey or A Tot of Rum?

I do like my wargaming magazines and buy at least a couple each month. So when a mate of mine asked me if I wanted to borrow some magazines that I don’t normally get, I jumped at the chance. The magazine in question is Battlegames.

As I was reading my way through said magazine, I came across a couple of articles, one on 1/72nd plastic soldiers and another that was a pirate skirmish game. Now I’ve played quite a few skirmish games over my years of wargaming but haven’t played any for awhile. The same goes for 1/72nd scale plastic soldiers, I dabbled with a few ancient armies for WAB about 10 years ago but have never used them for skirmish gaming.

So inspired by these articles off I went to my PC in search of details on what was now available. The first thing to say is if you want any details on 1/72nd soldiers the place to go is plasticsoldierreview.com , what a great web site, not only is it kept up to date on a regularly basis it has loads of pictures of the models you get on the spures plus details of future products and were you can buy them. After spending an hour trawling through this site I’d made a small list of periods that I liked the look of, with the Wild West and the Golden age of Pirates being my top two.

Now I must admit when I get inspired it does go to my head a bit and I must have said inspirational item straight away. So off I went to a local model shop where I had bought some 1/72nd stuff before, I was not disappointed.

After a rummage through their collection of box sets I’d picked out a box of Revell Cowboys and a box of HAT British Marines and Sailors.

At this stage I hadn’t decided what period I was going to play. So when I got home I prepared some of each box set ready for painting. To help inspire myself I searched through my DVD collection to see what films I had to watch. I found my Spaghetti Western set and decided to watch The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. That was all I needed the Marines and Sailors went back in their box and I started on the Cowboys. These have come out really nice and I have now painted up 17 of them, below are a couple of my favourites.

Now to decide on a system, being a big fan of anything Warhammer related and knowing that Warhammer Historical do a rules set (Legends of the Old West) I have ordered the rules book.

I have also popped back down that local model shop and picked up a box of Revell Indians and the Nexus Stampede set, so these will be my next things to paint while I wait for the rules to arrive.

Well that’s it for now, next time hopefully I‘ll have some Red Skins painted and maybe have had a chance to play some games.
