Once Upon a Time in the West

By Steve Evans.

Part 2: Rawhide?

The Legends of The West rules book has arrived and after about a week I'd read it from cover to cover and I must say I'm well impressed, it looks like it could be a real fun game.

One thing I have noticed is the game is very scenario based, I'm not saying you couldn't just put some models on the table and play but I think it's the scenarios that will really make the game.

So with this in mind I've decided I'm not going to play any games until I've sorted out the stuff I need to run a couple of these.

There's a good mix of different scenarios you can play from shoot outs to stagecoach hold ups but the first one I'm going to put together is the cattle rustling one. If you remember from last time I picked up the Nexus Stampede set, which comes with loads of longhorn models.

Checking the rules book I find I need twelve bases worth for markers. I sort these out with one or two models to a base.

Here are some pictures of some I've finished.

The only other thing I need to make for this game are some barbed wire fences, which I've knocked up using balsa wood, match sticks, plasty card and some GW barbed/razor wire.

Looking at some of the other scenarios I think I need some buildings. Now I don't want to break the bank here so I'm going to try some card ones. While looking on the Internet I came across a useful web site, The Rules with No Name and their small review of card buildings for this period. For the scale I'm looking for they think Edmund V.Gillon,Jr A Western Frontier Town in H-O Scale cut and assemble book is a good set. I managed to find a couple of places online which sale it, one on e-bay and the other Amazon.co.uk, so I've ordered a set.

I've managed to get a few more bits and pieces including the Imex wagon train set, which came with ten wagons, thirty settlers and some farm animals. The settlers will be perfect for filling my town with innocent bystanders. I'll make up a couple of the wagons to use with the town then put the rest away to use later.

It now feels like this project is coming together nicely, hopefully within the next month or so I should have a small town up and running. I also want to get the Native Indian supplement Plan Wars as I've got some models already for these and as everyone knows you've got to have some red skins when your playing games based in the Wild West.

That's all for now folks.
